Homemade Hamburger Helper

Hamburder Helper is one of those American convenience items I missed, but once I learned how to make a similar dish on my own, I realized just how much of a rip off it is! All Hamburger helper gives you is pasta and a seasoning packet filled with fake cheese, cornstarch, and enough salt to kill several snails. Basically it is glorified ramen noodles at quadruple the price. Don’t be a sucker, make it yourself!


  • 500 grams hamburger meat (a pound)
  • 2 cups dried pasta (200 grams macaroni)
  • 100 grams cheddar cheese (a few slices)
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 stock cubes
  • 1 tbsp corn starch
  • 1 onion (140 grams)
  • 1 red bell pepper (100 grams)
  • 1 cup sliced mushrooms (100 grams)
  • 6 stalks green onion
  • 1 tbsp paprika
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp oregano
  • salt and pepper to taste



Brown meat and onions in a large pan. Then add everything but the cheese, green onions, and cornstarch. Simmer until pasta is cooked stirring occasionally. Then add cornstarch and cook until thick sauce forms. Then add cheese and stir until melted. Top with green onions (or add them sooner if you hate raw green onions).
